Quilting on Vintage Linens

Last weekend "The Quilt Show" offered free temporary memberships for all of their shows. These are online web shows and feature all kinds of famous and creative quilters, demonstrating the various techniques they use. Some of them paint right on the quilts. Some use heirloom quality stitching. Some perform all kinds of magic with their appliques.

One of the favorites I watched featured Cindy Needham. She is an experienced quilter, more recently known for her use of vintage lace and linens on her quilts. She takes linens that have been "shelved" after collecting and adds them to the quilts with breathtaking results.

Since I too have linens sitting around, collected at yard sales and on auction sites, I thought I would give it a try. I took one of my midsized linens and put together the quilting batting and backing and then began to stitch. I tried to follow along with the cross-stitching and embroidery that the original creator had used. She/he used a floral design with leaves so I followed along with flowers, butterflies and even a bird bath. It was my first time using these materials and I was hooked.

Check it out!
